Stunning Back Garden Makeover Landscape Design Adelaide.
These Para Vista clients were after a total back garden makeover that focussed on a new outdoor spa they recently purchased.
The new landscape design Adelaide clients from Para Vista needed was to be low maintenance, include an area that could be used for family and friends to sit around an open fire pit, relax under the existing verandah and most importantly provide a setting the couple could enjoy using their spa all year round.
After speaking with a number of landscapers, Adelaide landscaping company Visual Landscape Gardening was selected to complete all the work required due to their quality workmanship and capability to handle all landscaping aspects involved.
The first task was to clear and remove all of the existing garden, excavating 50 tonne of soil.
Once excavated, 100mm of quarry rubble was compacted for a solid base to lay 400mm x 400mm Urbanstone pavers, 50mm thick on. A concrete block retaining wall was erected using Boral Heathstone with matching bullnose copping.
Contrasting colours were used for the pavers to create a visually appealing area for the fire pit to be placed on.
The feature spa area was built on a 120mm reinforced concrete slab, to cater for the weight of the spa when full of water. A timber verandah was built with a Dutch gable design for the roof.
Screening to the spa area, for privacy and to cater for all weather conditions was solved by using Kapur hardwood slats. The roof was constructed using corrugated iron panels(classic cream), and was finished off with gutters, downpipes and a rainwater tank to handle heavy water runoff.
Garden beds were prepared using Gypsum, organic loam and soil conditioner.
A fully automated drip irrigation system was installed to all garden beds inclusive of an isolation valve, backflow prevention device, solenoid, and a WIFI compatible timer so the plants could be watered as required even if the clients were on holiday anywhere in the world.
Lilly Pilly’s were planted around the featured paved area and Viburnums were planted along the fence line to screen the existing fence before a good quality organic mulch was dug in. Large river pebbles were then laid over the mulch to minimise soil disturbance and to help keep in ground moisture.
Once the clients saw how great the Kapur hardwood privacy screen looked, they decided to extend it down to their existing verandah area, hiding the garage and driveway from view when relaxing.
Garden Landscape Design Tips:
When landscaping Adelaide gardens, especially in the northern and north eastern suburbs, preparing the base for any new landscape design should take the highly reactive clay subsurface into account. Removing at least 200mm before compacting a minimum of 100mm quarry rubble, not dolomite is often required to safe guard against soil movement during the change of seasons.
Paving Adelaide residential gardens should be on a compacted quarry rubble base to stop salt leeching, a common problem using dolomite. While a little more expensive, your pavers will look great for many years to come.
Protecting the Kapur hardwood privacy screens was taken care of by using a quality oil to bring out the timber’s natural colour, protecting the wood from Adelaide’s harsh Sun.
Timber verandas if painted with good quality paint can last more than 15 years before needing a freshen up and are quite a bit cheaper than Colorbond verandas.
